  • Lets talk about them

    ...

Probably one of the most versatile flowers to grow. Looks equally beautiful both fresh and dried. everlasting papery petals on long stems that add a touch of romance to any floral work. An absolute workhorse in the garden, a true cut and come again which will flower all summer through to autumn and even tolerate light frosts - an absolute must.

  • How to make these beauties grow

    ...

Sow: *Autumn for overwintering or 4-6 weeks before the last frost.

How: Surface sow and cover lightly - light required for germination. *If overwintering grow on in a cold frame or greenhouse if you experience anything more then a light frost then I do in the south island.

    Space: 20-30cm

    Height: 90cm

    Where: Full sun

    Days to Maturity: 75-85 days

Pick: It’s a bit of personal preference. I aim for when the first 3-4 layers are open. The flowers continue to open once picked, so bear this in mind. 7+ days vase life or forever if dried

    Annual

  • Notes From The Garden

Can be a little wimpy when picked, so place in a jug of warm water, and into the fridge for a few hours. The flowers do closeup on cloudy days and at night.

    Pinch strawflowers for bushier plants

Classed as a hardy annual - however I do not class as a hardy annual in South Island NZ, as mine get heavily damaged by frosts. I sow mine in spring.
